José Bettio, better known as Zé Béttio (Promissão, January 2, 1926 – São Paulo, August 27, 2018), was a Brazilian radio broadcaster, singer, accordionist and composer.[1][2][3] Considered one of the biggest names in Brazilian radio, he was very successful in the 1970s and 1980s. His brothers were also radio broadcaster Osvaldo Bettio and accordionist and composer Arlindo Bettio, both deceased. Biography Born in the city of Promissão in 1926, he began his career as an accordion player, participating in the groups “Sertanejos Alegres” and “Zé Bettio e seu conjunto”.[4] Initially, he formed a trio (since at that time every sertanejo duo had an accordion player) where he was the soloist. He became a radio announcer for Rádio Difusora de Guarulhos on Saturdays by chance after reading an advertisement. With his colloquial way of speaking, he ended up being hired as a radio announcer.[4] He later worked at Rádio Cometa and Rádio São Paulo.[4] Discovered by Francisco Paes de Barros, he went to the radio stations Record (1970s), where he became known nationally, Capital (1980s) and Gazeta.[2][3] He returned to Rádio Record in 2006, where he hosted a morning program until the end of 2009. He was an audience phenomenon between the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.[2][4] He popularized several catchphrases, such as "wake up, throw water on him!", and launched important names in sertanejo music such as Milionário & José Rico.[4] Retirement and death Considered the "totem radio host of sertanejos", Zé Bettio retired in 2009 from Rádio Record.[5] In 2016, he suffered a stroke.[5] After his retirement, Zé Béttio spent his last years secluded on his farm in the interior of São Paulo.[2] He died on August 27, 2018, at the age of 92[4] while sleeping.[6] The radio broadcaster's body was buried at 4 pm on the same day at the Horto Florestal Cemetery in the city of São Paulo.[4] A rescue of Brazilian art, thus educating our youth.
