About Doune Castle: Doune Castle is located about an hour northwest of Edinburgh and is one of the most famous medieval castles in Scotland. The castle was built at the end of the 14th century by Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany – the then-ruler of Scotland and uncle of King James I. Particularly impressive: the almost completely preserved gatehouse, the massive keep, the great hall with its original wooden ceiling, and the exceptionally well-preserved medieval kitchens. Doune Castle is considered by historians to be one of the best-preserved late medieval castles in Scotland. For Outlander fans, Doune Castle is extremely important, as it was used in season 1 as Castle Leoch – the seat of Clan Mackenzie. Here Claire and Jamie meet: Colum Mackenzie, Dougal, Geillis Duncan, and many other key characters from the early storyline. Filming locations included: the courtyard of Castle Leoch, Colum's welcoming scenes, several courtyard and stable scenes, as well as arrival and clan sequences.
