After a meeting with the Ukrainians yesterday, an American delegation is now meeting with the Russians in Riyadh to try to negotiate a ceasefire. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the safety of navigation in the Black Sea would be at the heart of the negotiations. The United States is very optimistic about the outcome of the discussions. Trump's envoy to Russia, Steve Witkoff, says he expects "real progress" and even believes that Vladimir Putin "wants peace." For their part, the Russians are taking a more measured approach: "This is a very complex issue, and there is much to be done." Meanwhile, Ukraine and Russia continue to bombard each other. Russia accuses Ukraine of sending a drone to an oil pumping station in Kropotkinskaya, jeopardizing the ceasefire agreed to by Putin on energy infrastructure. The Russians retaliated overnight Sunday to Monday by sending around a hundred drones to the oblasts of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, Kirovohrad, and Zaporizhzhia. In the United States, President Donald Trump continues his war on major American universities, accusing them of corrupting education with "Wokist" ideology and encouraging pro-Palestinian demonstrations. A symbol of this standoff is the arrest on March 8 of Syrian Mahmoud Khalil, one of the leaders of the pro-Palestinian protests on the Columbia University campus. The day before, the administration had announced it was cutting $400 million in funding to this New York institution: "Today, we are demonstrating to Columbia and other universities that we will no longer tolerate their deplorable inaction," declared Education Secretary Linda McMahon. The Trump administration's offensive against academia is not new: this summer, ultra-conservatives had already succeeded in closing Stanford's Disinformation Observatory. And Donald Trump doesn't intend to stop there. Last week, he formalized the dismantling of the Department of Education, unable to abolish it outright. In Europe, Trump's posturing is being watched with concern. Faced with the potential withdrawal of the United States from NATO, the European Commission last week approved an €800 billion funding plan to rearm Europe by 2030. For the French Minister for Europe, Benjamin Haddad, the EU must establish a European preference regarding armaments. "If you have the technological know-how, you have control over its use," he stated in an interview with Euronews. The focus is therefore on autonomy: "450 million Europeans should not depend on 340 million Americans for their defense," asserted the European Commissioner for Defense, Andrius Kubilius, last week. What are the key issues in the negotiations in Riyadh? Why did Donald Trump declare war on American universities? And how does Europe intend to organize its military autonomy?
