This issue's gourmet feature is on sauce katsudon, a local delicacy from the Komagane and Ina areas of Shinshu. In this video, we'll introduce seven restaurants in Shinshu, from the original sauce katsudon to famous restaurants. There are other areas where sauce katsudon is popular, such as Fukui and Gunma, but the Aizu sauce katsudon we showed you the other day and this Shinshu sauce katsudon have similar characteristics. What it is like is a pork cutlet covered in sauce with shredded cabbage underneath. In addition to this sauce katsudon, Aizu and Shinshu have many overlapping food cultures, such as soba noodles made with squeezed daikon juice and the eating of horse meat. Historically, there is a connection in that Aizu domain lord Hoshina Masayuki was the lord of Takato domain in Shinano province before coming to Aizu, but sauce katsudon certainly didn't exist during the Edo period.
