We layer plants to make more plants from one plant! It’s free plants! There are six methods to propagate by “layering”. All methods are in the soil (ground level) EXCEPT “Air” layering. Air layering is … in the air ;). Find the layering method that works best for your plant. By nature, plants are far more likely to root using the ideal layering technique. Use the “Mound” Soil-Layering technique for Chokeberry. Mound layering is useful with heavy-stemmed, closely branched shrubs. Chokeberry IS that plant. Simple Layering is another technique we use. Use pencil-sized branches of dormant wood early in the spring. Bend the branch to the ground, remove any leaves, and cover the branches with “airy” soil (not heavy clay; soil that can hold moisture buyt not stay wet). Place a weight on the branches to keep them bent into the soil. DON’T cut the branches from the ‘mother’ plant. Then, we cover everything with about two inches of old woodchips.
