[Pioneer Initiative] Reviving Thailand's Shellac Forest Economy Lac insect cultivation

Project title: Reviving Thailand's Shellac Forest Economy Lac insect cultivation on diverse forest species, Turning underutilized forest land into living income, presented by Forest Resource Management Office No.2 (Chiang Rai), Royal Forest Department (RFD) . About the project: The Forest Resource Management is promoting "Lac" cultivation on host and economic forest trees, such as Siamese Rosewood, to help farmers earn supplementary income while waiting for long-term timber returns. The project supports sustainable forest restoration, reduces costs, and increases the value of forest areas. Lac is a high-value natural material used in shellac, coatings, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food products, and electronics, and is also an important Thai export. Field data indicates that lac production can generate 12,000- 16,000 THB per rai annually, with one rai potentially creating a total value of around 1 million THB over 25 years from both lac and timber. The project is currently being piloted with Surachat Holding Co., Ltd. in Phayao Province as a model for sustainable forest-based and green economy development. . โครงการส่งเสริมการเพิ่มรายได้ให้เกษตรกรผู้ปลูกไม้มีค่าทางเศรษฐกิจ โดยการเลี้ยงครั่ง (Lac) จากกรมป่าไม้ สำนักจัดการทรัพยากรป่าไม้ที่ 2 (เชียงราย) มุ่งสร้างรายได้ระหว่างรอผลผลิตจากการปลูกไม้เศรษฐกิจระยะยะยาว เช่น ไม้พะยูง โดยส่งเสริมการเลี้ยงและผลิต "ครั่ง (Lac)" บนต้นไม้พี่เลี้ยงและโม้เศรษฐกิจ เพื่อสร้างรายได้เสริมควบคู่กับการฟื้นฟูป่าไม้แบบยั่งยืน ช่วยลดต้นทุน ดูแลรักษาต้นไม้ และเพิ่มมูลค่าพื้นที่ป่าเศรษฐกิจ โดยครั่งเป็นวัตถุดิบธรรมชาติที่มีมูลค่าทางเศรษฐกิจสูง ใช้ในอุตสาหกรรมเชลแล็ก สีเคลือบ เครื่องสำอาง ยา อาหาร และอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ เป็นสินค้าส่งออกสำคัญของไทย จากข้อมูลภาคสนาม การผลิตครั่งสร้างรายได้เฉลี่ย 12,000-16,000 บาทต่อไร่ต่อปี และตลอด 25 ปี พื้นที่ 1 ไร่ สามารถสร้างมูลค่ารวมได้ประมาณ 1 ล้านบาท ทั้งจากรายได้ครั่งและมูลค่าไม้เศรษฐกิจ ปัจจุบันโครงการอยู่ระหว่างพัฒนาโมเดลร่วมกับ บริษัท สุรฉัตร โฮลดิ้ง จำกัด ในจังหวัดพะเยา เพื่อขยายสู่ต้นแบบเศรษฐกิจป่าไม้และเศรษฐกิจสีเขียวอย่างยั่งยืน
