SHORTER TOE? Learn what Brachymetatarsia is. We speak simply and directly to help patients with Orthopedics and Traumatology. Do you have one toe shorter than the others? Do you know what Brachymetatarsia is? In today's video, Dr. Américo Barbosa will explain what Brachymetatarsia is and its treatment in a simple and easy-to-understand way. But what is Brachymetatarsia? Brachymetatarsia is the shortening of one or more metatarsal bones. It usually occurs bilaterally (in both feet) and is most common in the fourth toe. When it affects more than one toe, it is called brachymetapodia. This condition occurs much more frequently in women than in men, with a ratio of up to 25 to 1 in men. Brachymetatarsia occurs when the metatarsal growth plate closes prematurely, resulting in premature growth cessation. This condition can be congenital or an acquired deformity resulting from trauma, infection, tumor, radiation, or previous surgery. Polydactyly or syndactyly can also occur in combination with brachymetatarsia; any associated problems should be addressed before or during treatment. Patients with brachymetatarsia often have difficulty walking and wearing shoes, experience pain, and have aesthetic complaints.
