Worlds End, who won the Keio Hai Spring Cup by leading from start to finish, took the lead again here. Sixpence and Seiun Hades, last year's Epsom Cup winner, followed, with Stellenbosch, aiming for his first title since the Oka Sho, Lebensteel, a five-time graded stakes winner, and Panja Tower, last year's NHK Mile Cup winner, also in good positions. Offtrail, who won the Swan Stakes in record time, and Gaia Force, last year's runner-up, were positioned in the middle of the pack. The horses entered the straight at a steady pace.
