[Race Commentary] Sixpence (5-year-old male, Tanaka) Hiroyasu achieves his first G1 victory after a fierce battle! Worlds End, who won the Keio Hai Spring Cup by leading from start to finish, took the lead again here. Sixpence and Seiun Hades, last year's Epsom Cup winner, followed, with Stellenbosch, aiming for his first title since the Oka Sho, Lebensteel, a five-time graded stakes winner, and Panja Tower, last year's NHK Mile Cup winner, also in good positions. Offtrail, who won the Swan Stakes in record time, and Gaia Force, last year's runner-up, were positioned in the middle of the pack. The horses entered the straight at a steady pace. Sixpence, who switched from the inside to the outside, followed by Seiun Hades, Gaia Force and Panja Tower from the far outside, and Offtrail from the inside, were closing in one after another on the tenacious Worlds End. These six horses battled it out as they headed towards the finish line, and it was Sixpence who pulled ahead at the very last moment. He had previously won three G2 races, including a dominant victory in the Spring Stakes and a record-breaking win in the Nakayama Kinen. However, on the big stages of GⅠ and JpnⅠ races, he suffered six consecutive defeats, including a 9th place finish in the Japanese Derby and a 12th place finish in last year's Yasuda Kinen, accumulating many frustrating experiences. He finally broke through that formidable wall and overcame it. Jockey Yutaka Take was entrusted with the reins of Sixpence after Admire Zoom, whom he was scheduled to ride, withdrew. Despite the sudden and first-time partnership, he said, "We were in a good position behind the front-runner. We headed into the straight with good momentum," demonstrating his ability to execute a solid race and secure the victory—a testament to his legendary status. Furthermore, the blinkers, worn for the first time by Sixpence, may have also contributed to his victory in this close race. It seems that this coronation was brought about by a combination of luck—the encounter with a masterful jockey—and ingenuity in achieving victory. [History] Speaking of major races named after people, the "Arima Kinen," named in honor of the achievements of former Japan Racing Association chairman Yoriyasu Arima, is famous. Similarly, the "Yasuda Kinen" is a race established in 1951 to honor the achievements of Izaemon Yasuda, who was involved in horse racing for three generations—Meiji, Taisho, and Showa—and contributed to the enactment of the Horse Racing Law in 1923 and the creation of the "Japan Derby." At its inception, it was called the "Yasuda Prize," but after Mr. Yasuda's death in 1958, it was renamed the "Yasuda Kinen." Initially, it was often held on the final day of the same racing season as the "Japan Derby" and was a handicap race for horses aged 3 and older. However, with the introduction of the grading system during the horse racing program reform in 1984, it was classified as a GⅠ race over 1,600 meters, held the week before the "Oaks," along with the newly established "Mile Championship" in the autumn of the same year (the entry requirements were changed to horses aged 4 and older). Furthermore, in 1993 it was relaunched as an international race, and from 1996 the race date was moved to the week after the "Japanese Derby," and the entry requirements were changed to horses aged 3 and older, making it the number one miler race of the first half of the year. 【Race overview】 Sunday, 7 June 2026 TOKYO YASUDA KINEN (G1) 1,600m, Turf Winner / Sixpence 【More English results are below】 https://japanracing.jp/en/ ▼ JRA Official Channel This is the official YouTube channel of the Japan Racing Association (JRA).
