The Paseo Sur plaza hosted another day of separate waste collection, a municipal initiative that emphasizes this system of dividing trash by placing it in different containers, thus helping the environment. Promoted by the Nikisch administration through the Secretariat of Environment and Urban Mobility, this initiative takes place every Saturday in open spaces, taking advantage of the weekend so that people can bring their waste, which ranges from clean, dry recyclables such as plastics, metals, paper, cardboard, and glass to WEEE (electrical and electronic waste). A resident of the San Miguel neighborhood, near the plaza, clearly expressed his point of view. “I was pleasantly surprised, of course. And then when I got back, I told my wife, ‘Look at the City Hall, the environmental department is there, they’re going to ask you what you have, what can be dropped off, because you always have something lying around the house that you never get around to throwing away, or you never make the time,’” he observed. “We brought what we had: the remains of a fluorescent light bulb, a mirror that was no longer usable, some car parts, and this came at a good time,” he added. “This is good, at least once in a while, knowing they’re coming, so we take things out, we tidy up our house, and it’s helpful that these kinds of things happen,” he noted, and by way of reflection, he concluded by saying, “This brings us closer to the City Hall, because there are things we complain about, but we’re not even capable of doing ourselves, like organizing our trash.”
