Ibuka at 30: A Moment for Reflection, Not Just Celebration
Rwandan author Antoine Mugesera shares powerful reflections as Ibuka marks 30 years of existence. He emphasizes that this milestone should go beyond celebration—it should be a moment of honest assessment, or what is often referred to as a “bilan”: – What has been achieved – What challenges remain – What more needs to be done Over the past three decades, Ibuka has made significant progress in supporting genocide survivors through education, economic empowerment, justice, and advocacy. Many survivors have rebuilt their lives, accessed education, and achieved self-reliance. However, Mugesera stresses that the work is not finished. He also reflects on deeper historical questions surrounding the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, challenging narratives about identity and highlighting the role of governance, manipulation, and ideology in shaping events. “Genocide was not inevitable,” he explains. “It was a failure of leadership and a result of how identity was used.” This conversation calls for: – Honest reflection on history – Education of younger generations – Continued unity and nation-building As Rwanda looks ahead, the message is clear: the future depends on knowledge, leadership, and a shared commitment to unity.
