The backing track features chopped-up samples of the band who played at our wedding (Josh Miller, Sean Gill, & Carlos Pacheco) performing an improvisation based off of S. Carey’s “Alpenglow”, a song near and dear to the hearts of Sarah & me. The title, “Glymur”, is a reference to the second-tallest waterfall in Iceland, which also happened to be our first hiking location on our honeymoon. We were both left speechless by the majesty and profound beauty of the landscape, especially compared to our usual surroundings in urban Philadelphia, which motivated me to capture a kind of powerful yet subtle beauty in the form of a percussion solo. To accomplish this, I paired strong and drum-centric material with a water-like, flowing, and fragile electronic sound world. ABOUT THE COMPOSER: Evan Chapman is a percussionist, videographer, photographer, composer, and teacher based out of Philadelphia, PA. Evan received a Bachelor of Music in Classical Percussion Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2013, and has since gone on to build a freelance career in both the contemporary-classical and indie rock worlds. Evan is an active performer, most notably as co-founder and drummer in the instrumental percussion rock/electronic trio Square Peg Round Hole (dubbed a “creative adventure” by Bob Boilen of NPR). The group’s sophomore album, Juniper, was released in March 2016 (Spartan Records) as a double-LP and was met with critical acclaim. In the past few years, Square Peg Round Hole has been direct support for bands like The Bad Plus, Dawn of Midi, and Kneebody, went on a co-headlining east coast tour with Ian Chang of Son Lux (selling out Union Pool in Brooklyn), played venues across the country including the Electric Factory, Brooklyn Bowl, National Sawdust, and the Old National Centre, and has appeared on festivals including SXSW (Austin, TX), and Treefort (Boise, ID). Along the way, the group has received press attention from outlets like Modern Drummer, Mental Floss, Paste Magazine, Boing Boing, and NPR. http://www.evanmchapman.com ABOUT MATTHEW CAREY: Matthew Carey is a freelance percussionist in Texas, based out of the Austin/San Antonio area where he studies under the instruction of Adam Bedell.
