Within the woods of Lower Macleay Park (nestled in much larger Forest Park) there are the abandoned, moss and graffiti-covered , roofless, remains of a primarily stone building that once served a simple purpose. Completed in 1930 it served mainly as a restroom and covered picnic shelter in the park at its start. But many decades later, and long after it ceased to be used, it became a landmark more popular than anyone who helped create it could have ever imagined. Known as the Stone House, but more famously as the "Witch's Castle", the state of these remains alone and where they are located give off enough creepy and haunted vibes for some. But its placement within Macleay Park has also forever solidified its association with one of Portland's oldest acts of crime: the story of a man name Danford Balch killing another man named Mortimer Stump on the Stark Street Ferry after Stump ran off with Balch's "daughter" (I use quotes because there has be inferences that she may have been his step-daughter). In this video I cover both elements: the creepy and paranormal side as well as the general history of this building as it was originally intended.
