Traditional Jazz Press Rolls (Dodds, Krupa, Singleton): An Important Tip
It's important to avoid the center of the snare drum when playing traditional jazz press rolls. Playing near the edge of the drum will give you a much better sound. This is the way all the great jazz drummers (like Baby Dodds, Gene Krupa, Zutty Singleton, Ray Bauduc, etc.) played their press rolls. Try it, it makes a big difference!
