IAP SIE | Game Development in the Age of AI

The video game industry stands at a technological inflection point comparable to the transition from 2D to 3D. This lecture explores the paradigm shift from “manual creation” to “curated generation,” driven by the rapid integration of Generative AI (GenAI) into the development pipeline. We will examine the industry’s core pillars—Design, Art, Engineering, Production, and more—comparing the labor-intensive workflows of the past decade with the emerging AI-augmented pipelines of today and tomorrow. Through a critical lens, the session explores how professional roles are evolving: artists becoming visual directors, software engineers transforming into system architects, and writers adopting the role of narrative gardeners. Beyond tools and workflows, the lecture addresses the ethical controversies, labor implications, and trust deficits that accompany this technological shift. Students will gain an understanding of how GenAI may help break the traditional “Iron Triangle” of game development—scope, schedule, and cost—while also learning to navigate the complex moral and social terrain of this new frontier.
