Racing Destruction Set (C64) | History & Gameplay | Building Chaos Since 1985

Racing Destruction Set is one of the most innovative - and chaotic - racing games ever released for the Commodore 64. Created by Rick Koenig and published by Electronic Arts in 1985, it combined split-screen multiplayer racing with a powerful track editor that let players design their own courses, adjust gravity, place hazards, and create some truly ridiculous challenges. Long before "sandbox" games were common, Racing Destruction Set gave players the freedom to experiment, compete, and build almost any kind of race track they could imagine. In this video, we take a look at the history of Racing Destruction Set, including Rick Koenig's work with Mattel's Blue Sky Rangers, the game's development at Electronic Arts, and its critical reception. We'll also explore the gameplay, vehicles, track construction system, physics, multiplayer mode, and the reasons why the game remains a beloved Commodore 64 classic more than 40 years later.
