Cycling on the Ems Cycle Path from the Senne River to the North Sea 🔹Stage 8 from Papenburg to Leer to Emden Our cycling journey on the Ems Cycle Path is coming to an end and we're reaching the North Sea. There was plenty to discover until then. Starting in Papenburg, the Venice of the North with its numerous canals and bridges, museum ships, the Zeitspeicher (time storage facility), and the famous Meyer Werft (Meyer shipyard). Here we were able to witness the undocking of the AIDAnova up close. The AIDAnova is the first cruise ship in the world to be powered by liquefied natural gas. The typical East Frisian windmills can be seen again and again. Of the 174 windmills originally built in East Frisia, about half are still preserved today. The Frisian Bridge between Weener and Hilkenborg was destroyed on December 3, 2015, when a freighter rammed its folding central section. It remains closed to this day. According to current plans, the destroyed Frisian Bridge is to be replaced by Europe's largest swing bridge by 2024. Where the Leda River makes a large loop and flows into the Ems River lies the district town of Leer. The artistically designed houses and facades are striking, as are the small shops and cafés that invite us to stop for a cup of tea. From Leer, we continue over the Jann-Berghaus Bridge, one of the largest bascule bridges in Western Europe, into the flat Rheiderland, the area between the Ems and the Dollard (Dutch: Dollard), which consists largely of marshland and lies only slightly above, or in some places even below, sea level. Massive dikes and barriers protect the area from storm surges. From Bingum, we continue to Jemgum and, in the very north of the Rheiderland, to the fishing village of Ditzum. The "end of the world," as the town is also popularly called, because the Ems separates it from the rest of East Frisia. The historic ferry takes us to the other bank, Petkum. The Ems Barrier, one of the most modern barriers in Europe, is visible from afar. It serves as coastal protection during storm surges and, if necessary, dams the waters of the Ems until they are deep enough for the giant ships of the Meyer Werft shipyard on their journey from Papenburg to the open North Sea. From Petkum, we travel close to the Ems River to the outer harbor in Emden. But before we end the trip, we make a short detour to the birthplace of the famous comedian and actor Otto Waalkes and explore the sights at the Ratsdelft in Emden. Of course, the herring sandwich and the giant ice cream are not to be missed. While the 375 km route previously ended at the station forecourt in Emden, it now leads to the new endpoint at the Middelmantje. Here, the city of Emden has paved the coat of arms of the Ems Cycle Route into the ground, modeled on the starting point at the Ems springs. The new end point is on the headland between the outer harbor and the large sea lock opposite the Borkum quay.
