Ivan Smirnov is a Russian cyclist competing for the renowned Kazakhstani team XDS Astana. We met at the Czech Tour stage race, in which Ivan was participating. We discussed a variety of topics with this new hero: how did he join the professional XDS Astana team? Why aren't Russian riders currently being noticed by top teams? What does it take to gain neutral status in cycling? And is there a chance for a Russian to join a top team like XDS Astana? We spent several days with the team, meeting everyone involved.
