Albania, with Tirana as its capital and most important city, is home to 2.8 million souls in a territory of 28,748 km². Nestled in the heart of the Balkans, Albania has a rich history and culture. It is an official candidate for accession to the European Union. With a population density of 97 inhabitants per km², the population is concentrated in cities such as Tirana, Durrës, Vlorë and Shkodër. It has a beautiful coastline on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. The ethnic majority is Albanian, with Greek, Gypsy and Aromunian minorities. Official statistics say that 7.1% of Albanian women married a foreigner. The most common countries of origin are: Italy, Greece, Germany, the United Kingdom and Turkey. As for enemies, there is no defined enemy, but relations with Serbia can be tense due to the situation in the Serbian territory of Kosovo. Albania finds itself in a complex geopolitical situation. It is an official candidate for accession to the European Union, but has to address some challenges such as corruption and organized crime. Albania's economy is in transition, with moderate growth in recent years. Unemployment remains a major problem.
