TMJ Issues? Do you know what correct oral rest posture is?
First we have to find “the spot”. 👅This is located just behind the front teeth and slightly back away from the teeth. The tongue shouldn’t be touching the teeth at all. We want the tongue suctioned up to the roof of the mouth with lips sealed and teeth apart so that nasal breathing can happen as much as possible. The pressure created from the tongue suction allows the airway to open better and breathing can happen more optimally. Now, putting the tongue on that one spot isn’t enough. A common mistake is using just the tip of the tongue and placing it to the roof of the mouth. But, in fact, we need the entire tongue up there including the middle and the back of the tongue. The picture above shows 3 dots where the spot should be. This is not very easy to do! For a lot of people it does NOT come naturally and it should. So if You cannot get your whole tongue up there, why is that? There are a couple of different reasons that could be. A tongue tie (tethered oral tissue)- could be in the front, middle, or back of your tongue. The tissue is beneath your tongue, holding it down towards the floor of the mouth and preventing the whole thing from elevating up. Habit- you have never really done this behavior before and it feels odd and doesn’t come naturally or you don’t think to do it because of lack of awareness. Poor proprioception and neurological control- because your body has not tried to ever really put the tongue up to the roof of the mouth, your brain and your tongue aren’t communicating how to carry out the action. Most of these reasons can be addressed with proper exercises and habit training with myofunctional therapy.
