Battery Storage, Distributed Generation and Data Centers: A View from Across the Pond

Meeting the current and future energy demands in Northern Virginia, particularly with the accelerated pressures emanating from data centers, will require robust and strategic applications of battery energy storage systems. This is particularly the case when meeting the needs for ensuring uninterruptible, high-quality power, managing energy costs, and providing clean backup power and enabling the integration of intermittent renewable energies. As local governments of the region work to integrate battery energy storge systems into their plans, they can draw valuable lessons from across the Atlantic and the stories from counterparts in countries such as Germany who have developed innovative policies and programs for the integration of battery energy storage systems to meet the needs of data centers and support distributed generation. The Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) and ECO-STOR hosted a webinar on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, 12:00pm to 1:00pm (EST) in which Mr. Alexander Kuester, head of strategy for ECO-STOR, a leading energy storage firm in Germany, shared the policies guiding battery storage system in Germany and their relationship to data centers, distributed generation at the local level.
