Gómez Leal was arrested on Thursday, August 21, in the La Estrada neighborhood of Engativá, and brought before a criminal judge who ordered his detention in the Modelo prison. A prosecutor from the Bogotá Police Department's Life Unit charged Óscar Santiago Gómez Leal as the alleged perpetrator of the aggravated femicide of his partner. The man was captured by the CTI (Institutional Investigation Unit) on a public street in the La Estrada neighborhood of Engativá, western Bogotá. The events: a tragedy foretold The investigation by the Attorney General's Office, led by a prosecutor from the Bogotá Life Unit, reconstructed the fateful early morning. According to the Prosecutor's Office, the couple had celebrated Gómez Leal's graduation at the apartment where they lived. Around 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 27, after a heated argument, the man allegedly strangled and suffocated María Camila. When the victim was already in agony, Gómez Leal threw her out of a ninth-floor window, killing her instantly. “On July 27, 2025, in a home (…) Óscar Santiago proceeded to suffocate and strangle the victim. And when María Camila was dying, he proceeded, obviously with the intention and knowledge of committing a femicide, to throw her out of a ninth-floor window, landing the victim on the first floor, thus causing her death,” the prosecutor stated during the hearing. The prosecutor recounted the minutes leading up to the crime. He stated that, around 5:00 a.m., Gómez Leal strangled and suffocated the journalist. “When she was dying, he threw her out of the window of apartment 921, from where she fell lifeless,” he recounted before the judge, as the victim's family looked on. See the case analysis and autopsy with expert doctors and criminal lawyers here: A Pattern of Systematic Violence The prosecutor revealed to the judge that this was not an isolated incident, but rather a repeated cycle of physical, verbal, and psychological violence: “On multiple occasions, he called her a prostitute, called her fat, was jealous of her, and checked her cell phone with the intention of degrading her human condition. Even family members witnessed the abuse. On February 1, several of them saw how Gómez Leal insulted, humiliated, and physically assaulted the young woman,” explained the representative of the prosecuting body. The Technical Investigation Corps (CTI) team confirmed that for months the victim was subjected to constant abuse. María Camila's family denounced from the beginning that the young woman was a victim of gender-based violence that was never formally reported until the tragedy. According to the autopsy report from the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, the woman suffered asphyxiation and other physical injuries prior to the fall.
