2018 Honda Clarity Test Drive Review: Chock Full Of Innovation

The Honda Clarity is a plug-in hybrid vehicle built to deliver an impressive all-electric driving range and excellent MPGs when running on its gas engine. Under the hood sits a 1.5-liter four-cylinder churning out just 103 hp and 99 lb-ft of torque, working with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor mated to a 17 kWh lithium-ion battery producing 181 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque. The two powertrains combine for a total output of 212 hp. The battery is good for 48 miles of electric driving before the gas engine kicks in to deliver 42 mpg. Working in tandem, the number is an impressive 110 MPGe. We thoroughly enjoyed driving the Clarity and only a few minor annoyances kept it from earning our highest ranking.
