Mark Twain also proclaimed his admiration for Wilkins, and was the first to receive the William Dean Howells Medal, a distinction awarded to novelists by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. "The Long Arm" made its first appearance in the August 1895 issue of Chapman's Magazine of Fiction and gave the title to an anthology that would be published that same year, "The Long Arm and Other Detective Stories."
