Kupura zviyo. (Threshing grains)

Join my family and me at our rural home in Bikita as we bring in the harvest! In our district, we face low rainfall, which is why we specialize in growing resilient small grains that are vital to our food security. In this video, we take you through the traditional process of threshing, a practice that is as much about community as it is about food. We start by preparing the dwala (the flat rock surface), which serves as our natural threshing floor. As we work, the rhythm of the threshing is matched by traditional songs, which help boost our morale and keep the energy high. It is a time for storytelling, laughter, and bonding as we process the crop that will sustain us. This season, our hard work paid off, and we are grateful to have secured 9 bags (50kg each) of grain enough to see our family through to the next harvest. For me, I only eat sadza made from small grains, which is highly nutritious.
