My last day Spring Salmon Fly Fishing at Lower Brae on the River Spey | March 2026

Spring salmon fly fishing on the Lower Brae beat of the River Spey at Gordon Castle, in near gale force winds, made for a final day I won’t forget in a hurry. Lower Brae sits on the middle reaches of the Spey within the Gordon Castle Estate, a stretch known for its classic fly water and steady spring runs when conditions line up. This time, conditions had other ideas. The wind was relentless from first light, tearing down the river and making even the simplest cast a challenge. Despite it all, there were moments. I hooked into a fish but couldn’t hold on, one of those brief connections that stays with you long after the line goes slack. As if the day needed anything else, we also watched a canoe capsize mid-river, a sharp reminder of just how powerful the Spey can be when the weather turns. I had Theo with me throughout, unfazed as ever, and was lucky to share the beat with a brilliant group of fishermen over from Montreal. Good company makes all the difference on tough days, and there was plenty of laughter in amongst the chaos. Not the ending to the trip I’d planned, but certainly one I’ll remember.
