Lancaster is located 70 miles (110 km) north (via I-5) of downtown Los Angeles in the Antelope Valley. The area became known as the Antelope Valley because of the immense herds of antelopes. Approximately 60,000 antelopes roamed the Antelope Valley until the herds were reduced by severe winters in the late 1800s and by hunters. The population of Lancaster has grown from 37,000 at the time of its incorporation in 1977 to over 171,105 as of 2023. The area is known as the Antelope Valley, was originally home to the Paiute Indians.
