Chipbreaker.. Fail and Fix - Plane Tuning Workshop essentials [no73]

In this video .. This lump of Oak needed flatting off and I grabbed this plane.. It was ok to start with and then as the rough surface started to change into a smooth surface the mouth got clogged up. And that's when I thought I should film the rest and show how I fixed the problem. This old Stanley no 5 and a half was in a really bad shape a while ago. It was given to me by a woman who had her father's tools in a shed and they had not been used in years. She gave me a few planes for my students to clean up and work on. It's a great looking older plane. But it wouldn't work right. It didn't make any sense in use and the adjustment was crazy. After a couple of minutes I went back to the most basic of plane checks... Is the bottom flat? No, when I pushed the very rear down onto a flat surface, the front lifted nearly 2mm. It was so bad that I paid an engineer to sort it for me.
