Wes Huff Is 100% Wrong About Tithing — A Biblical Breakdown

First fruits Was a Hand Basket of Food: Deuteronomy 26:1-11 (Not Deuteronomy 16) My goal here is not to stir up drama, but to clarify Scripture and help believers understand what the Bible actually teaches about giving under the New Covenant. 📌 WHAT THIS VIDEO COVERS In this response, we examine each of Wes Huff’s major points one by one: 1. Abraham’s “tithe” in Genesis 14 Wes suggests Abraham tithed 10% of his income. But Scripture shows Abraham gave a one-time portion of the spoils of war, not his personal income, not money, and not a recurring command. This was before he became Abraham, and before any covenantal tithe existed. 2. Jacob’s vow in Genesis 28 Wes states Jacob tithed. But Jacob never actually gave a tithe—he simply made a conditional vow during a moment of fear and uncertainty. He never built the temple he promised, and Scripture gives no evidence he ever followed through. This is not a model for New Testament giving. 3. Cain and Abel’s offerings Wes suggests their offerings imply early tithing. But the text simply says they brought offerings—not tithes, percentages, or mandated giving. These were freewill offerings, not 10% income payments. 4. The Mosaic Law and the Tithe This is one of the biggest misunderstandings in modern churches. Under Moses: Tithing was NEVER money Only land-owners tithed agricultural produce Merchants, craftsmen, blacksmiths, and fishermen did NOT tithe Tithes were always edible goods from the land of Israel Even though money existed and is mentioned frequently in the Old Testament, it was never acceptable for tithing. 5. Firstfruits and the Firstborn Wes links these to tithing, but the Bible does not. Firstfruits was a single hand-basket of early produce eaten by the giver with family and guests. The firstborn offering relates to Passover redemption, not tithing, not percentages, and not funding local ministry. 6. New Testament Giving In the New Testament, giving takes a dramatic shift: There is no command for Christians to tithe 10% The emphasis is repeatedly on giving to the poor, not funding church buildings 2 Corinthians 8–9 is directly about relief for suffering believers in Jerusalem, not paying pastors or supporting institutional budgets Christians are called to generosity, not percentages. To cheerful giving, not compulsory tithing. To love-driven support, not law-driven obligation. 🎯 SO WHAT SHOULD CHRISTIANS DO? We are FREE in Christ. Not free to be selfish, but free from the Old Covenant tithe system so we can give generously, willingly, and sacrificially to: the poor missions gospel work needs within the Body of Christ ❤️ Final Thoughts Again, I think Wes Huff is a great teacher, but I believe he is mistaken on this particular topic. My hope is that this video brings Scripture into clearer focus and helps believers understand the freedom and responsibility of New Covenant giving.
