[I found the best used car!] That famous car that was out of reach when I was young, maybe now I can get it... "Middle-aged people and used cars" wander in search of such dreams. The first of 2021 is a dream match between the Ferrari 512BB and the Lamborghini Jarama GTS! It's a mixed martial arts match between a mid-engine sports car and a FR Gran Turismo, but I hope you enjoy it. This dream match was realized in the large garage of Vintage Shonan, where we visited to cover the air-cooled 911 and Elan. First of all, the 512BB. Needless to say, it is a special existence for certain people, as it served as the twin pillars of the supercar era along with the Countach. I will give you a rough introduction. In 1972, the 365GT/4BB (Berlinetta Boxer), the predecessor to the 512BB, appeared with a sleek Pininfarina body. The number 365 refers to the displacement per cylinder, so 365cc x 12 gives a rough estimate of 4.4 liters. Maximum output is 385hp. This 365GT/4BB underwent a minor change in July 1976 to expand the engine displacement and become the 512BB. Maximum output was reduced to 360hp, but torque was improved. The number 512 means a 5-liter 12-cylinder engine. As the name Boxer suggests, this engine looks like a horizontally opposed engine, but the internal movement of the opposing cylinders shows that it is technically a V-type engine with a 180-degree bank angle. Up until the 512BB, it was a carburetor type (natural vaporization), but the advanced 512BBi that appeared in 1981 was an injection type (fuel injection). It maintained a maximum output of 340hp while fighting against exhaust gas regulations. Production of this model ended in 1984. The flagship position was then handed over to its successor, the Testarossa. Considering the passage of time, a model that uses a carburetor feels like the end of an era. On the other hand, Lamborghini's Jarama GTS was the company's last FR sports car, and was released in 1972 as a later model of the Jarama GT that appeared in 1970. The engine displacement remains the same at 4 liters (the bank angle of the 12-cylinder engine is 60 degrees). The early GT had a maximum output of 350 hp, while the GTS had 370 hp. The official figures are that 176 GTs and 152 GTSs were produced. The vehicle photographed is a rare UK-spec right-hand drive GTS, which has been extensively restored by a British Lamborghini collector. There are plenty of documents, specifications, and maintenance manuals from that time. Comparing the two cars, the Harama GTS had a quicker body and a sharper engine. Its wheelbase is 2,380mm, 120mm shorter than the BB Series' 2,500mm. It also has power steering, making it easy to operate at low speeds. On the other hand, the 512BB's engine has a long life and torque, which increases the rotation speed. This car's engine is well-finished, and all consumable parts such as dampers and bushings have been thoroughly replaced, making it surprisingly comfortable and light. It feels like it's performing to its full potential. The supercar I dreamed of as a child still shines brilliantly in that place, even now as an adult.
