Traffic Sign Retroreflectivity – Webinar Series Part 1
Date: 2/22/2022 Traffic signs provide an important means of communicating information to road users. They need to be visible to be effective. The nighttime environment presents many sign visibility challenges. Since drivers cannot see as many visual cues as they can during the day, this places greater reliance on signs and other traffic control devices. To provide nighttime sign visibility, signs are made using retroreflective sheeting. Retroreflectivity is the property of a material that re-directs light back to the originating source. The Federal Highway Administration adopted traffic sign retroreflectivity requirements that were included as Revision 2 of the 2003 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). To comply with the new requirements, public agencies had until January 2012 to implement and then continue to use an assessment or management method that is designed to maintain traffic sign retroreflectivity at or above the minimum levels specified. This workshop is intended for those directly involved in sign maintenance, particularly sign retroreflectivity. Participants will be “walked through” the assessment and management methods available for conducting sign maintenance with respect to retroreflectivity. Specific objectives of the workshop are to: understand the MUTCD sign retroreflectivity requirements; and learn traffic sign assessment and management methods that can be used to comply with the MUTCD retroreflectivity requirements. Who Should Attend – Roadway agency personnel who are responsible for sign management, installation and maintenance, and who want to learn more about the assessment methods that can be used to comply with the MUTCD retroreflectivity requirements. Instructor – Ronald W. Eck, P.E. Ron is Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at West Virginia University and Director of the West Virginia Local Technical Assistance Program (WV LTAP). He has been involved in traffic engineering and roadway safety for over 40 years. There is no registration fee for this training.
