Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary- Uganda, Lake Victoria
Ngamba Island is home to 48 orphaned chimps that have been rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. It is an outstanding place to visit, and there are great accommodations for overnight excursions. This is the feeding platform where the caregivers give them fruits, and vegetables. Visitors at the sanctuary are able to watch all the fascinating natural behaviors of the chimpanzees, including the male dominance displays. The fence separates the great apes from the visitors. On the other side of the fence are 95 acres of natural forest habitat where the chimps live together in their community. The sanctuary was founded in 1998 by Dr. Jane Goodall and a group of founding trustees. Aside from rescuing these endangered primates, the Chimpanzee Trust implements very effective conservation programs to protect chimpanzees in their natural habitat in Uganda.
