Why Chasing the BJJ Meta is Making You Worse

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it’s easy to fall into the trap of constantly chasing the latest “meta” technique. One year it’s a certain guard, the next it’s leg locks, then a new system appears and everyone rushes to copy what the best competitors are doing. The Danaher leg lock revolution changed modern BJJ forever, and leg attacks became one of the biggest examples of this. Many grapplers started adding heel hooks, leg entanglements, and submission systems into their game — but without building the surrounding skills needed to make those techniques actually work. The problem with constantly chasing trends is that you end up collecting isolated techniques that don’t connect. You have a little bit of everything, but no clear system. Your guard doesn’t lead into your attacks, you become a wrestler chasing choi bar tech, and your game becomes a collection of moves instead of a complete strategy. A better approach is building a condensed, focused BJJ game. Master a smaller number of positions, understand the connections between them, and develop a style where every skill supports the next one. The best grapplers aren’t always the ones with the biggest technique library — they’re the ones who have a game that fits together. In this video, we discuss why chasing the BJJ meta might actually be slowing your progress, and how focusing on a smaller, connected system can make you a more effective grappler. —--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Timestamps: Introduction 00:00 The Issue with the ‘Meta’ 00:27 Case Study 02:45 How to Train Instead 04:11 —--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Work With Me!
