On February 24, 2023, in Herndon, Virginia, Brendan Banfield (a former IRS agent) and the family’s Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, with whom he was having an affair, carried out a premeditated plot to kill his wife, Christine Banfield, and an innocent stranger, Joseph Ryan. Joseph Ryan was lured to the home under false pretenses as part of a staged home invasion gone wrong. Brendan Banfield was convicted on February 2, 2026, of two counts of aggravated murder, use of a firearm, and child endangerment after a three-week trial. Juliana pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Brendan now faces a mandatory life sentence with no parole.
