He was the eldest of five children born to actress Zanetta Farussi and dancer Gaetano Giuseppe Casanova. It is known that two brothers, Francesco Giuseppe and Giovanni Battista, became painters, and another, Gaetano Alviso, was a priest. Giacomo's only sister, Maria Magdalena, married a court musician and worked as a dancer at the Dresden theater. Giacomo's father died when he was eight years old. His mother earned money touring Europe, so the boy spent his childhood with his grandmother, Marzia Baldissera. Plagued by nosebleeds, on his ninth birthday he was sent to a boarding school in Padua for treatment. In one of his writings, he later wrote that this event was an unpleasant surprise: Giacomo felt as if he had been abandoned. Casanova left his service and found work as a violinist at the Teatro San Samuele, where he enjoyed participating in scandalous parties and questionable entertainment. Giacomo recognized the perils of such a life but saw no other way. Until one day, his knowledge of medicine allowed him to change his life: he found himself in the same gondola with Senator Giovanni di Matteo Bragadin. The official became ill, and Casanova provided first aid. Casanova's first encounter with the opposite sex occurred at the age of 11, in the home of his teacher, Gozzi. His lover was the priest's younger sister, Bettina. Casanova would describe her in his memoirs as beautiful, cheerful, and avid reader. It was this girl who ignited in the heart of the famous adventurer the feelings that would become Giacomo's main passion. Despite Bettina's marriage, Casanova retained warm feelings for her throughout his life. After this initial encounter, Casanova's love and intimate relationships were unburdened by seriousness. In his memoirs, he wrote that the main focus of his life was feelings and pleasure. However, Casanova was always cautious, using "safety caps" that he would test beforehand by inflating. He had no plans to burden himself with children. The ideal relationship, according to Giacomo, consisted of four stages: first, he found a woman dissatisfied with her lover, then he relieved her of her predicament. Next, he seduced her, starting a fleeting affair. At the end of the relationship, the lover, losing interest in the woman, introduced her to a rich man or arranged a marriage. Giacomo himself was never officially married. Many of his adventures are described in his memoirs. Historians acknowledge that the stories are full of inaccuracies and perhaps exaggerated, but the plot outline is realistic. It is these memoirs that allow us to estimate the number of women Casanova had – at least 120. Moreover, in several places in his memoirs, the author hints between the lines at affairs with men. As a result of a financial scam, Casanova acquired a silk factory in France. But business didn't interest him: he spent most of his profits on love affairs with his subordinates, turning them into a harem. Debt returned, and he was on the run again. The years of wandering had left their mark on Giacomo: after being diagnosed with a venereal disease, the adventurer returned to Venice. He had no connections there, and there was no money for women or gambling. Casanova lived off the Inquisition—they paid him for espionage. Simply put, he collected gossip about citizens and recorded their statements about the authorities. In the last years of his life, Casanova worked as a library curator at Dux Castle in the Czech Republic. Creativity became his only solace. He died at the age of 73, far from his homeland, leaving behind about 20 works, the most important of which is his memoir, "The Story of My Life." He spent over six years writing his memoirs, never finishing them: after Giacomo's death, editors divided the 3,500 pages into 10 volumes. Casanova's image remains relevant in culture: films are made about him, songs are written about him—his memoirs also contributed to his fame. Giacomo's surname has become a household name—the nickname "Casanova" is usually given to young men who frequently change lovers.
