It is considered the first specialized television network in the Arab world. It began broadcasting from Fucino-Avezzano, near Rome, Italy, on October 15, 1993, on the Arabsat satellite with five free-to-air channels broadcasting 24/7. In 1996, it transitioned to a pay-TV network. It owned a group of channels specializing in music, movies, variety shows, children's programming, and sports. In early 2002, with Abdullah, the son of Saleh Kamel, taking over the network's sports channels, several other channels were liquidated, including "ART5 Music," which had exclusive rights to a number of Arab artists.
