We were granted special permission to film the climactic scene of the Croissant Circus, which performed during the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival held at Hirosaki Castle (Hirosaki Park) in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. Croissant Circus is a "nouveau cirque" (new circus) troupe consisting of performers and a band, formed in the 1990s by a tightrope walker who traveled around Europe performing acrobatics. The name comes from the French word "croissant," meaning crescent moon, and shares the same etymology as the musical term "crescendo" (gradually increasing the volume) and the Latin word for "to create," with a crescent moon as its symbol. The stage features a diverse and talented group of artists, including graduates of circus schools in Japan and abroad, national gymnastics champions, tightrope walkers who have competed in world championships, and third-generation Korean residents in Japan who carry on traditional Korean performing arts. The band provides live original music, further enhancing the performance. Furthermore, all the equipment used in the circus is designed and engineered in-house. Under the direction of the ringmaster, who trained at the French National Circus School, the troupe members take full responsibility for everything from equipment setup to safety management. Currently, they perform in a variety of spaces, from small-scale events to their own circus tent that can accommodate 250 people, as well as cultural halls and outdoor festivals. Their greatest appeal lies in their performances that use no words whatsoever.
