Another orchard will be built here, producing delicious food long after I'm gone. This prospect gives me a magical feeling of traveling back in time, of leaving something truly valuable behind. I already have a lot of old apple varieties and some pears, maybe it's time for more unusual, extravagant varieties. If the winters get milder, maybe it's worth planting trees like persimmons or almonds? Since our native pear trees are suffering from pear rust, perhaps it's worth planting the more resistant and delicious Asian pears?
