FIRST READING Jeremiah 13:1-11 “The people will be like this sash, which is good for nothing” A reading from the Book of Jeremiah The Lord said to me: “Go and buy a linen sash and put it around your waist, but do not wet it.” So I bought the sash and put it around my waist, as the Lord had commanded me. The word of the Lord came to me a second time: “Take the sash you bought and are wearing around your waist, and go to the Euphrates River and hide it there in a crevice in the rocks.” So I went and hid the sash on the bank of the Euphrates, as the Lord had commanded me. Many days later the Lord said to me: “Go to the Euphrates River and get the sash that I told you to hide there.” I went to the Euphrates to look for the sash and take it from where I had hidden it. But the sash had been ruined and was no longer good for anything. Then the Lord spoke to me, saying: “This is what the Lord says: In this way I will destroy the pride of Judah, the great arrogance of Jerusalem. This wicked people, who refuse to listen to my words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts and follow other gods to serve and worship them, will become like this sash, which is no longer good for anything. For just as a sash is fastened around a man’s waist, so I had bound to Myself the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, says the Lord, that they might be my people, proclaiming my name, my praise, and my glory.” But they did not obey Me.” The word of the Lord.
