What Did Gandalf Actually Do Between His Death and Return | LOTR Lore

What Did Gandalf Actually Do Between His Death and Return | LOTR Lore Everyone knows Gandalf died on the Bridge and came back stronger. Almost nobody asks what actually happened in between. He fell. He fought the Balrog through a subterranean lake, up the Endless Stair, and onto the peak of Zirakzigil above the clouds. He won. Then his body gave out. He describes what followed in a single sentence that Tolkien never fully explained. He strayed out of thought and time. That phrase is the whole story. His spirit was stripped of everything. His name, his memories, his identity as Gandalf the Grey, all of it gone. He existed in a void outside the structure of time as a naked mote of being. And then Eru Ilúvatar intervened directly, which almost never happens, gave him a new commission, and sent him back. Not healed. Remade. He woke alone on a freezing mountain peak with no memory of who he was. Galadriel sent the eagles. Lothlórien nursed him back. He had to actively recall his own name. The white robes were not a promotion. They were an accurate description of what had replaced the grey.
