The Vasyugan Swamps are the largest swamp in the Northern Hemisphere. 55,000 square kilometers of impassable bog in the heart of Siberia, where beneath a layer of peat lie flooded villages, Soviet oil rigs, and a million lakes that no one has ever counted. This place is larger than Switzerland — and it has not a single permanent settlement. Here in the 19th century, 726 Old Believers were found who had voluntarily gone into the most impassable part of Russia so that no one would find them.
