Abelardo de la Espriella celebrated his victory after receiving the credentials that accredit him as president-elect. “We saved the nation! We saved democracy! May God bless Colombia, may God protect our families, may He enlighten and strengthen those of us who defend the Republic,” he declared at an event held at Corferias in Bogotá, before the full session of the National Electoral Council (CNE). “Long live the nation! Long live Colombia! Long live liberty! Long live the Republic! The tiger, today more than ever, stands firm for the nation!” he added. The president-elect alternated between confrontational messages directed at his opponents and calls for unity. “We will begin by conducting a thorough audit, an anti-corruption overhaul that will allow us to rigorously account for and determine the true extent of the looting and institutional decay we inherited,” he said, before adding that “the soul of the nation is stronger than those who have sought to bring it to its knees.” He also called for an end to polarization: “I urge all Colombians to walk together in this new stage.
