In this Wednesday's sermon, based on Genesis 24:67—the event where Isaac overcame the grief of losing his mother and found comfort through Rebekah—we hope you will take time to meditate deeply on the sense of loss we face in life and the source of true comfort. Scripture Text "Isaac brought Rebekah into the tent of his mother Sarah, took her as his wife, and loved her. And Isaac was comforted after the death of his mother." (Genesis 24:67) Summary of the Message 1. Who Am I? : The Image of Isaac After Experiencing Loss The word 'comfort' (or 'solace') first appears in the Bible when Noah was born (Genesis 5:29). If the comfort through Noah was God's macroscopic plan for all of humanity, the comfort Isaac received in this passage is a practical solace that applies concretely to an individual's life. We are all those who have left the Garden of Eden and live without our true source and protector. Isaac's deep sorrow represents the spiritual reality of us humans wandering away from God. *Scripture Text* 2. Who Is the True Comforter? : Human Limitations and Jesus Christ Job's three friends (Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar), the epitome of suffering, traveled a long distance to comfort him, but through their condemnation and judgment, they instead brought him even greater despair and pain. As such, human comfort is imperfect and cannot be the ultimate solution. Only Jesus Christ—the One who can deliver us from the fear of death and hell, who came to earth clothed in the same flesh as us and silently bore the lowest and most miserable suffering of the cross—is the sole and true Comforter who saves the human soul. 3. When Can We Receive True Comfort? : Love and Fellowship Within the Church Isaac found comfort only when he took Rebekah as his wife and 'loved' her. Likewise, true comfort does not stop at merely receiving love; it is perfected only when we 'love and reach out first' to our brothers and sisters, who are one body within Christ, our Head. The Lord never leaves us alone; He is an eternal companion who silently walks by our side through the muddy paths and storms of life. When we follow the Lord's guidance and look after one another within the church purchased with His blood, true peace that the world cannot give overflows in our hearts.
