The Unpopular Truth: 4 Years Later WB Was Still Right To Cancel Batgirl

It has been almost four years since Warner Bros. Discovery sent a shockwave through the industry by permanently shelving the $90 million Batgirl movie, and while the internet went nuclear at the time, I’m making the case that the studio actually made the right call to protect the DC brand. Between historic box office disasters like Shazam! Fury of the Gods and the "not releasable" quality of a film originally designed for small screens, the studio chose the short-term PR nightmare over the long-term damage of releasing another mediocre product. By utilizing a "Purchase Accounting" tax write-off to claw back up to $25 million, they effectively cleared the deck for the new DCU to find its footing with a Superman film that audiences actually respect. It wasn't the popular choice, but from a business and balance sheet perspective, it was the only logical way to protect the future of these characters.
