The House of Us: The Amazing History of the Bahay Kubo
The Bahay Kubo is a national symbol for Filipinos and symbolises many great Filipino qualities and traits such as the concept of bayanihan, resourcefulness, creativity, and a great respect and relationship with the natural environment. Even during Spanish colonization, Spanish builders chose to adopt the design and style of the Bahay Kubo because of how well-suited for our climate it was! Even during the Mt Pinatubo eruption in 1991, most bahay kubo survived even though many wood or stone houses collapsed! There’s a reason why the bahay kubo became one of our national symbols. It encompasses everything Filipino; from being made to perfectly cope with our climate, to reflecting the values we hold near and dear to our hearts.
