This era of house music was built very differently from a lot of modern tech house. Instead of polished synth presets, huge drops and overly clean loops, producers were often working with samplers, vinyl, rack FX, drum loops, one-shots, vocal chops, stabs and a lot of arrangement work. Peace Division’s Justin Drake has spoken about using samplers like the Ensoniq and Akai S3000XL, along with FX units like the Boss SE-50, Alesis Quadraverb and Ensoniq DP/4. So in this tutorial, I’ll show you how to recreate that kind of workflow inside Ableton: chopping samples, layering percussion, adding swing, building a dirty groove, processing sounds with sampler-style grit, and arranging the track so it evolves like a proper early 2000s club record. We’ll cover: Building a percussion-heavy tribal groove Chopping loops instead of just dragging them in Using sampler-style processing for grit and character Creating a simple, hypnotic bassline Adding stabs, vocals and one-shots Using old-school rack-style FX Arranging the track so the groove keeps moving I also talk about the sample sources and sample packs I used, including Ueberschall Loop Essentials, Zero-G Datafiles, Best Service Housemaster and Best Service XX Large Club Edition 3, as well as the importance of sampling from vinyl for drum loops, vocals, stabs and textures. The goal isn’t to copy Peace Division exactly, but to understand the mindset behind that sound: loops, samplers, swing, grit, percussion and arrangement. ᐅᐅᐅGEAR I USEᐊᐊᐊ STUDIO SOFTWARE ● ▶ DAW: https://amzn.to/3NS7pOc ● STUDIO HARDWARE ● ▶ Laptop: https://amzn.to/3Q2uiQZ ▶ Monitor: https://amzn.to/3H8BBCN ▶ Second monitor: https://amzn.to/3th9V8V ▶ Speakers: https://amzn.to/3xjNQJk ▶ Speaker stands: https://amzn.to/3Q6Ckbp ▶ Audio Interface (Main): https://amzn.to/3Ns8uN4 ▶ Audio Interface (Portable): https://amzn.to/3zjQtvR ▶ MIDI Keyboard: https://amzn.to/3tcTZob ▶ Headphones: https://amzn.to/3x6XVrH ▶ Chair: https://amzn.to/3Mo5tfk ▶ USB Turntable: https://amzn.to/3Mmi1Uq ● DJ EQUIPMENT ● ▶ DJ Headphones: https://amzn.to/3xnJrEY ▶ Mixer: https://amzn.to/3H0Ljqz ▶ DJ USB sticks: https://amzn.to/398oJ2N ▶ DJ Recorder: https://amzn.to/3xkLF8c ▶ DJ Bag: https://amzn.to/3x6XUE9 ▶ DJ Travel case: https://amzn.to/3GXo3Ke ● CAMERA EQUIPMENT ● ▶ Main Camera: https://amzn.to/3tiqaCE ▶ Webcam: https://amzn.to/3xbjXJH ▶ Vlog Camera: https://amzn.to/3xil8Zg ▶ Lapel Mic: https://amzn.to/3NSFHkv ▶ Camera Tripod: https://amzn.to/3x8Ww3U ▶ Mini Tripod: https://amzn.to/3NpUTFI ▶ Lights: https://amzn.to/3NnaMNb ▶ Softbox: https://amzn.to/3xjTVoW ▶ SD Card: https://amzn.to/3ml5B4u ▶ Camera bag: https://amzn.to/3mit9XP ▶ Lens 50mm: https://amzn.to/3xbQAHq ▶ Speed booster: https://amzn.to/3GXoMLd Contents: 00:00 Intro 01:23 Background Track 01:48 Research 03:58 Referencing 05:59The Project 06:30 Drums 16:01 Bass 19:27 Melodic Elements 26:27 Vocals 28:48 Effects 30:32 The Secret Sauce 33:02 Download The Project Files 33:41 Watch This Next I am a DJ, producer and Engineer living in Berlin.
