Nigel Farage has dramatically resigned as MP for Clacton in a bid to force a by-election he says will pit “the people” against the political establishment. The Reform UK leader insists he has done nothing wrong, despite mounting scrutiny over undeclared financial support including a separate row over a £5 million gift and claims about benefits from close ally George Cottrell. Mr Farage says voters in Clacton should judge him directly, but rivals say he is trying to turn a standards scandal into a political stunt. The move sets up a huge test of whether Farage can turn personal controversy into a fresh populist victory.
