It's a story of Silesia, a city of chimneys, steelworks, and mines, of local pride, shifting borders, difficult choices, and a club that, for many, meant more than just a coat of arms. AKS Chorzów, Zielone Koniczynki, one of the forgotten chapters of Polish football. In this episode, I take you to Królewska Huta, later Chorzów. To a city where football wasn't a sideline, but a part of life. I'll tell you about the club's origins in 1910, still as VfR Königshütte, and about Reden's Hill, the stadium overlooking the industrial heart of Silesia. It will be about 1937, when AKS, as newcomers, touched football heaven. It will be about a team that didn't join the league to learn, but instead entered the game for the highest stakes. It will be about the derby with Ruch Chorzów, which was more than just a local match, for it conveyed the ambition of the city and two distinct stories of Silesian football. But this story can't be told through goals alone. The most difficult chapter will also come: World War II, Germania Königshütte, the Gauliga, and questions that, years later, still lack simple answers. This isn't to easily judge people from the comfort of an armchair. Rather, it's to understand how athletes tried to survive in a world where flags were changing over the city, and politics intervened more strongly than any opponent on the pitch. I'll tell you about Leonard Piontek, the Polish representative from the 1938 World Cup. I'll talk about the Piec brothers, Jerzy Wostal, coach Karl Neidlinger, and the generation that lived in a place where history was never black and white. I'll also talk about the post-war period, name changes, reforms, the reorganization of sport under the Polish People's Republic, and the slow marginalization of AKS. And finally, we'll return to the stadium. To a place that was once the heart of the club, and today exists more in memory than in the cityscape. Because when a stadium disappears beneath the concrete, it's not just the venue that disappears. It's a point of reference, a path to the grandstand, and a piece of local identity.
