Inside Rudolph Schindler’s Kallis-Sharlin Residence (1946) | Hollywood Hills Modernism
What is it like to walk through a Rudolph Schindler house in the Hollywood Hills? Join architecture brokers Mark Mendez and Brian Linder as they explore the Kallis-Sharlin Residence (1946). It's a remarkable example of Schindler’s site-driven modernism overlooking the San Fernando Valley. Designed in 1946 by renowned architect Rudolph Schindler, the Kallis-Sharlin Residence is a striking example of site-driven modernism, dramatically set into a steep hillside with expansive views over the San Fernando Valley. In this architectural tour, Mark Mendez and Brian Linder explore the home and discuss the design language that makes Schindler one of the most experimental and influential architects of Southern California modernism. Originally built for artist and film art director Mischa Kallis, the house follows the natural contours of the land. Layered volumes, terraces, and walls of glass connect the interior spaces to the surrounding landscape, an approach that reflects Schindler’s belief in designing architecture from the inside out. Throughout the home, Schindler’s signature ideas are on full display: • unconventional spatial geometry • clerestory lighting beneath a dramatic butterfly roof • compression and release of space • strong indoor-outdoor relationships • expressive fireplaces and sculptural forms Warm materials, including mahogany and Douglas fir walls, ceilings, and built-in furniture, bring richness and depth to the interior architecture. On the exterior, distinctive grape-stake cladding wraps portions of the home, allowing the building to blend into its wooded hillside setting while also enhancing privacy. Over the decades the home evolved through a series of thoughtful interventions. Most recently, the residence underwent a careful multi-year restoration from 2017–2022 in collaboration with architect Barbara Bestor, FAIA, and architect Jeff Fink. The restoration preserved the spirit of Schindler’s architecture while subtly introducing modern updates, a process Brian describes as “egoless intervention,” where the architect’s hand supports the original design rather than competing with it. Today the Kallis-Sharlin Residence, designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #860, stands as a beautifully preserved and highly livable architectural landmark — and a rare opportunity to experience one of Schindler’s hillside compositions.
