"Pain Remains III: In a Sea of Fire" closes out one of the saddest trilogies we've ever experienced and we have a lot of feelings. Going in, everyone in the comments was warning us that part three was the worst, but for us?? Parts one and two actually hit harder emotionally. Maybe it's because we watched them a week apart instead of in one sitting, but the wrap up here felt like more of the same as two rather than a fresh gut punch. That said, soundwise Abi actually preferred this one to two. Gabby leaned the other way (two was lyrically more special for her, the "world stopped spinning while everyone else kept going" line from part two STILL hasn't left her brain). A few things we noticed: we could actually understand Will way more clearly on this one (whether that's because he enunciated harder or because our Lorna ears are getting trained, who knows). The pig squeal moments in the verses were Abi's favorite, the deep enunciated growls in the chorus stood out to both of us, and "witness the death of god, hear the devil's choir" genuinely scared us. The guitar moments didn't quite hit the same as the previous tracks for us, and visually nothing topped part two's blue lightning and rain (the sea of fire was iconic though, hello Johnny Cash energy). We also learned this trilogy isn't autobiographical, Will apparently wrote it inspired by an anime character which is so cool. We love when bands write outside their own experiences. Now we want to dive into more of Lorna's storytelling and we kept seeing comments about Glenwood (which is about Will's relationship with his dad??), so that might be next. Also, we got into our future as a band again (Gabby may not pass the lead singer audition after that "ring of fire" moment), the saddest ways to die debate (criminal minds raised Gabby okay), and our fantasy of watching Will at Red Rocks from a hot tub with binoculars because we are NOT prepared for summer Lorna Shore.
