The original Soul Surfer and Pioneer Jim Banks
Vast Lives Ep 10 - Jim Banks Please support Jim : @jimbankssurfboards5039 Instagram @jimbanksurfboards Sumba Images courtesy of @ Jason Childs Such a pleasure to have sat down in this episode with renowned surfboard shaper Jim Banks at his stunning house on the hill in Uluwatu, Bali. Our conversation really is an in-depth look inside the world of surfboard shaping and how surfing culture has changed, coupled with Jim's personal journey as a surfer and a craftsman. We opened the episode with a talk about the evolution of surfboard builders in the surfing industry. Jim speaks candidly of how shapers are so often placed on the bottom rung of the surfing industry despite the importance that they bring in shaping the very boards these surfers ride. He looks back on 53 years as a shaper and brings to light years of knowledge and skill that one wouldn't find in books but rather through just working and being taught by others. Jim shared with us what it was like to live in Bali after his first arrival there in 1977. We also got a chance to touch on Jim's transition from professional surfing into shaping and exploration. He talked about how the design of surfboards is changing and how he's been working specifically with twin fins. As we concluded our talk, Jim reflected on the changes he has seen in Bali over the years. This podcast episode is a treasure box of enlightenment for the enthusiast in surfing, shaping, and their associated culture. The story of Jim Banks' journey speaks to the hard work and art of surfboard creation; the deep connection between surfers and the waves they ride.
